ONE DAY TO LOSE HIM

Luke 2:41–49

There is a danger that doesn’t come with warning signs. No alarms. No announcements. No flashing lights, It’s the silent drift. The kind that doesn’t happen all at once—but happens in moments… One day at a time.

The Bible says Mary and Joseph were on their way home from Jerusalem. They had just come from a major spiritual gathering—the Passover feast. They were faithful.Consistent.Committed.

These weren’t sinners in the street—these were saints in the sanctuary.

And yet…they lost Jesus.

The Danger of Assumption

Scripture says they were: “Supposing Him to have been in the company…” They assumed He was there. And that’s where many of us are right now.

We assume He’s with us because:

  • We still go to church

  • We still know the songs

  • We still use the language

  • We still wear the title

But assumption can replace intimacy.

You can be around spiritual thingsand still be disconnected from the Savior.

You can know how to “do church”and still not know where Jesus is in your life.

Spiritual proximity is not the same as spiritual possession.

The Subtle Drift

They didn’t lose Him in rebellion. They lost Him in routine. It didn’t take years. It didn’t take a lifetime. It took one day.

One day of distraction. One day of assumption. One day of going through the motions.

One day you felt the conviction—and ignored it anyway. One day you heard the warning—and did it anyway. One day you said, “just this once”—and did it anyway. One day you knew better—and did it anyway.

And just like that—you’re still moving…but He’s missing.

Looking in the Wrong Places

The Bible says they searched for Him among: “their kinsfolk and acquaintances…”

They checked with family. They checked with friends. They checked with the crowd.

But they couldn’t find Him. Because everybody around you may not know where Jesus is.

Some people can hype you—but they can’t help you.

Some people can shout with you—but they can’t show you where He is.

Some people can walk with you—but they don’t know Him for themselves.

And if you’re not careful, you’ll mistake noise for presenceand crowd for connection.

The Cost of Neglect

It took one day to lose Him—but three days to find Him. Because it always takes longert o recover what you neglected... than it did to lose it. Neglect is expensive.

It costs you:

  • Sensitivity

  • Clarity

  • Peace

  • Direction

You don’t lose God overnight—you drift. And the scariest part is—you can keep moving and not even realize He’s gone.

The Turning Point

When they realized Jesus was missing, they didn’t keep going forward. They turned around.

They went back to Jerusalem—the place where they last experienced Him.

And that’s the word for somebody reading this:

You don’t need something new. You need to go back.

Back to prayer. Back to seeking. Back to hunger. Back to sincerity.

Because you can’t find Jesus going further away from where you left Him.

The Good News

When they found Him... He was in the temple. Still teaching. Still present. Still about His Father’s business.

In other words: He never moved. They did.

And that’s the hope of this entire text— Even if you lost Him…you can find Him again.

He’s not hiding from you. He’s waiting on you.

Final Word

You can lose money and recover it. You can lose opportunities and regain them. You can lose relationships and rebuild them.

But if you lose Jesus—you’ve lost everything.

One day to lose Him.Three days to find Him.

The question is:

How far have you traveled on the assumption that He was with you?

And more importantly— Are you ready to go back and get Him? 🔥

Giving: Don’t Lose Him in Your Priorities

One of the quickest ways to drift is not just in prayer—but in priorities. Because where your treasure is, there will your heart be also (Matthew 6:21).

Giving is not about money—it’s about alignment. It’s a declaration that God is first, not last. When you give, you’re saying, “Lord, You’re not just part of my life—you are my source.” Don’t let distraction rob you of devotion—even in your stewardship.

Honor Him with your substance, not leftovers. Because when you keep God first in your giving, you guard your heart from drifting away from His presence.

If He’s not first in your giving, He won’t stay first in your living. 🔥
